You’re invited to a special evening celebrating the humanities in New Hampshire and exploring democracy in the age of AI with Jenn White, host of NPR’s nationally syndicated program 1A, and special guests, Roopika Risam, Lawrence Lessig, and Fr. Philip Larrey.

Come explore democracy in the age of AI through the dynamic lenses of philosophy, history, digital humanities, culture, and society. Jenn White and 1A invite us to look at both what divides and connects us, taking us beyond the headlines and into the heart of the story to better understand the complicated issues of our time, like artificial intelligence (AI) and democracy, together.

SPECIAL GUESTS:

Roopika Risam, Chair of Film & Media Studies at Dartmouth College, will discuss her new book, Data Empire: The Power of Information to Organize, Control, and Dominate (featured on Barack Obama’s 2026 Summer Reading List). It provides a sweeping look at humans and information from pre-history to Elon Musk/DOGE in 2025, and how technology has been changing the balance between governments and corporations.

 

 

 

Lawrence Lessig, Roy L. Furman Professor of Law and Leadership at Harvard Law School, is widely recognized for his scholarship on Internet, intellectual property, and the development of the Creative Commons. Lessig has also written extensively on the ways in which social media and AI-driven systems can contribute to large-scale political polarization. He is the author of many books on money in politics and how digital platforms are eroding trust and accountability.

 

 

 

Fr. Philip Larrey, Ph.D., is a Catholic priest and professor of philosophy at Boston College. He previously held the Chair of Logic and Epistemology at the Pontifical Lateran University in the Vatican, where he also served as Dean of the Philosophy Department. His scholarly work focuses on the philosophy of knowledge, critical thinking, and the impact of the digital era on society. A notable aspect of his work is his engagement with the philosophical implications of artificial intelligence. Fr. Larrey actively engages with industry leaders and scholars at the Vatican, fostering discussions on how technology influences societal structures.
