History

Opened in 1927, the Capitol Theatre was a prime stop on the Vaudeville circuit. Later, The Cap became Concord's premier movie house and concert hall.

The theater was revived in 1995 and then fully restored in 2003. During both projects, hundreds of volunteers contributed over 5,000 hours to paint and restore the magnificent High-Hollywood, Egyptian-motif artwork that gives the theater its unique charm. Said The Boston Globe, "these volunteers have done something extraordinary on Main Street in Concord."

The Capitol Center for the Arts has hosted a great variety of performances including Hairspray, RENT,Movin’ Out, Cats, B.B. King, Anne Murray, Adam Lambert, Hal Holbrook, Lily Tomlin, David Sedaris, Joan Baez, Greg Allman, The Neville Brothers, Lyle Lovett, Shawn Colvin, Merle Haggard, Penn and Teller, The Smothers Brothers, Patty Loveless, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Alison Krauss and Union Station, George Carlin, Howie Mandel, Steven Wright, Paula Poundstone, Train, Brian Wilson, and many others.
